Beginning Quilting: What Size Should My Quilt Be?

Beginning Quilting NowThose who are beginning quilting must remember this: SIZE DOES MATTER. While the term is amusing, this is not a joke. Size helps determine the design that we may use on our quilts. It also affects the length of the fabrics that we may use. In quilting, there is no such thing as one size fits all. Creating a quilted placemat will not require the same amount of cloth as a bed sheet. The large patterns of a bed sheet are obviously inapplicable to a small quilted placemat.

One of the first questions that a quilter must ask herself is ‘What size should my quilt be?’ Much depends on the quilts purpose. Is the quilt meant to cover a mattress? Is it meant to protect the table from spills? Is the quilt meant to hang on a wall? Once that purpose is determined then the size is pretty easy from there.

However in some cases, you can’t end it there. For example, you’ll be making a quilt for a bed. But what is the bed mattress size? They come in sorts of different sizes. Check to see the size of the bed in order to make the perfect quilt

Bed Mattress Sizes. Thankfully, these are pretty standardized. If you know what kind of bed it is, here are the measurements:

Crib - 28” x 52”
Cot - 30” x 75”
Twin - 39” x 75”
Long Twin - 39” x 80”
Double - 54” x 74.5”
Queen - 60” X 80”
King - 76” x 80”
California King - 72” x 84”

However, there is no standard mattress depth but most are 9-10 inches deep. If you are giving a quilt as a gift and you have no clue what the size of the bed is, then the surest bet is to make one fit a queen. It is the most popular bed mattress size after all.

Lap Quilts are smaller quilts mean to be worn when sitting down. A 40” x 60” size will be enough for adults to take a nap on the sofa. A child could easily make do with one square yard.

Quilted Wall Hangings can be any size. It can match the length of the wall or it may not. It all depends on your preference.

Quilted Table Tops are meant to decorate the table.

Square card table - 36” x 36”
Six Seat Dining Table - 42” x 54
Eight Seat Dining Table – 42” x 72”

Placemats. 13” x 19”
Coasters. 3.5” x 3.5”
